If you are unsure what to include, the notes below cover what is most useful to us.

A useful first message

What helps

  • The organisation

What it does, roughly how large the operation is, and who depends on the system in question.

  • The problem

Described the way you would describe it to a colleague. Precision about the symptom is more useful than a proposed solution.

  • The fixed constraints

Deadlines, systems that must remain in place, obligations that cannot move, and anything already decided.

  • What success looks like

What should be true once the system works. This is usually the fastest route to whether we are a fit.

What happens next

How we respond

Everything sent to us is read by an engineer. If the work looks like a fit, we will come back with questions before we come back with a proposal — understanding the operation is the first stage of the work, not a preliminary to it. If it is not a fit, we will say so plainly, and where we can, say what would be.
